The viticulture in Madeira Island dates back almost to the period of their occupation in the fifteenth century, and historical data show that only twenty-five years after the start of colonization, already existed exports of Madeira wine. The wine of Madeira or Madeira wine is a fortified wine produced in the demarcated region of Madeira that has PDO, Protected Designation of Origin. Nowadays the grape varieties most commonly used in the production of Madeira wine are the Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malvasia and Tinta Negra, however existing other varieties are recommended and authorized by the supervisory organism.
