How Whisky is made?
Malting: this is the stage of barley preparation, where the grains are placed in tanks with water to start the germination process. After a few days the sprouts appear, which go through the last phase of this stage, drying.
Cooking: here the malted barley undergoes some cooking, usually 3, each one having a specific time and temperature. In the end it is possible to obtain a fermentable sugar through the activation of some enzymes in the malt.
Fermentation: the cooking result is transferred to vats and mixed with yeast. In this process, the sugars obtained in the previous step will nourish the yeast. The result is a drink similar to beer, with an alcohol content between 5 and 8%.
Distillation: this is the step where alcohol and water separate. This process can have up to 3 steps, and it is possible to determine whether the drink will be lighter or heavier. The result is a liquid with about 70% alcohol content.
Maturation: after being slightly diluted to reduce the alcohol content, the distillate is placed in barrels to mature for at least 3 years. In this way, it gains the flavors and aromas of wood. This is where the age of whiskey is determined!
Homogenization: as the maturation is done in several barrels, it is common for whiskeys to have some differences, so they are mixed to become homogeneous. At this stage, natural coloring can also be added to obtain a final color.
Filtering: it is at this stage that impurities and residues from maturation are removed from the drink. This is a step that can also make the whiskey a little lighter.
Bottling: at the end of production, the drink is bottled. This step can be done at the origin or in the country where you will sell. In this case, the distillery ships the whiskey in bulk for it to be bottled and sold.
